RUSSIAN EMIGRATION ON THE WAVES OF FREEDOM

Lesley Chamberlain: Lenin's Private War: The Voyage of the Philosophy Steamer and the Exile of the Intelligentsia

Lesley Chamberlain is a British journalist, writer, and historian of Russian and German culture. She graduated from Oxford and was a Reuters correspondent in Russia during the Cold War. She is a full-time writer and author of dozen books; she is fond of Thomas Mann and Russian religious philosophy.

"I married literature and never divorced it. I've spent much of my life in the company of great German and Russian writers when there weren't nearly so many writers about. … In Moscow in 1979, I began to write in my own way: about the shape of people's lives, about ambition juxtaposed with memory, about the interplay of different languages (German, Russian, English, French, Italian, Spanish); about place, and places, and about the history of ideas."

Today we present her book "Lenin's Private War: The Voyage of the Philosophy Steamer and the Exile of the Intelligentsia" (2007), dedicated to Russian religious philosophers in exile.

This interview was conducted on the eve of the international conference "RUSSIAN EMIGRATION ON THE WAVES OF FREEDOM," where Lesley Chamberlain participated. The conference was organized by The New Review, the oldest intellectual journal of the multiethnic Russian-speaking diaspora (USA). The conference took place at the Harriman Institute, Columbia University, on May 2-3, 2022. In celebration of the centennial jubilee of the Philosophy Steamer and the 80th anniversary of The New Review / Novyi Zhurnal, this conference focuses on the unknown pages of the intellectual history of Russian émigré culture in the 20th century and the problem of exterritoriality of émigré heritage. This conference seeks to integrate the multiethnic Russian-language diaspora's social, cultural, and intellectual contributions to world culture.

The interview was taken by Marina Adamovitch, Editor-in-chief of The New Review.
